How to identify if a person has dengue symptoms?

Dengue, spread through the bite of the Aedes Mosquito, is a common disease in India, Southeast Asia, Southern China, Taiwan, Pacific Islands, Mexico, Africa, Central and South America and the Caribbean (except Cayman islands and Cuba). There are four different kinds of dengue viruses responsible for causing yellow fever and West Nile infection. It is vital to diagnose dengue early to avoid severe health concerns such as hemorrhagic fever, damage to blood vessels, liver enlargement etc.

Early stage symptoms

Most people who get affected with dengue show the following early-stage symptoms:

·         Mild fever

·         Headache

·         Nausea or vomiting

·         Muscle and joint pain

·         Discomfort in the eyes

·         Rashes on the body

The above symptoms are warning signs that the patient must not ignore.

Severe dengue symptoms

Generally, it takes two to five days for the symptoms of severe dengue to show. Severe dengue is life-threatening as the patient might feel weak and physically drained within a few hours after being infected. Here are the severe dengue symptoms:

·         Stomach and belly pain

·         Muscle tenderness

·         Frequent vomiting

·         Bleeding from the gums and nose

·         Blood in the stool

·         Feeling restless, weak, and tired

One in twenty people suffering from severe dengue starts developing the above symptoms within a few hours. Before it gets too late, it’s vital to take treatment and medical care. The general advice to people suffering from serious illness is to visit the hospital and prepare a full proof dengue insurance plan. The patient can recover from dengue within a week or two with proper treatment.

Treatment for dengue

If you suffered from dengue before and recovered fully, you still are not entirely immune; the risk of developing a dengue hemorrhagic fever is high in a second-time infection. Also, pregnant women and infants are at a higher risk of developing dengue.

Since there is no specific medicine for treating dengue, doctors prescribe acetaminophen with pain-relievers. The peak of the infection is within 3-4 days, and blood platelets could drastically fall at that time.
